WINSTED, July 10 – Robert Johnson had a pair of triples, including a three-run triple in the sixth inning that broke open the game, to lead the Winsted American Legion baseball team to a 10-3 Zone 1 victory over Avon Wednesday night at Walker Field.
Winsted (9-12, 9-12 Zone 1) had a two-run lead going into the sixth inning before a five-run surge put the game away for good. Johnson, who was 2-for-2, had a three-run triple with two out and the bases loaded to give Winsted breathing room.
Pitcher Luke Green went the distance for Post 43, scattering eight hits and striking out four. He walked just one.
For Avon (6-14, 6-11 Zone 1), Jake Coppen was 2-for-3 while Max Raha was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Post 201 scored three times in the third inning to cut a four-run deficit to one run. With the bases loaded, Matt Leopold drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Miles Borenstein drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Emmett Borenstein’s hard single to left field drove in the third run for Avon.
The two teams resume their three-game series on Thursday night in Avon at Buckingham Field and conclude it Friday night in Winsted.
