
Terryville’s Kenny Kurski, shown in last year’s Tri-State League finals, pitched five innings of relief Tuesday and struck out eight to help the Black Sox reach the finals of the 2019 Stan Musial state tournament.
WATERBURY, July 30 – Justin McColluch hit a solo home run and relief pitcher Kenny Kerski struck out eight in five innings of work to lead the Terryville Black Sox baseball team to a 6-0 win over Blasius Chevrolet-Waterbury in the third round of the 2019 Stan Musial state baseball tournament at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday night.
The victory put Terryville (19-2, 3-0 Stan Musial) into the tournament’s championship game for the second consecutive year. The Black Sox are the last undefeated team in the tournament and need to one more victory to claim their second straight state championship.
A year ago, the Black Sox and Blasius Chevrolet, both members of the Tri-State Baseball League, shared the Stan Musial title after several attempts to play the championship game were cancelled by rain.
With the win, Terryville secured a berth in the upcoming AABC (American Amateur Baseball Congress) Northeast World Series in Torrington and Waterbury on August 8-11 with top teams from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Terryville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by McColluch, who drove in two runs and scored two runs. The Black Sox took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, scoring three runs on a sacrifice fly from McColluch, a RBI double from Mike Chiovetti and an error.
Pitcher Andrew Hinkley got the start for Terryville and went two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Kerski picked up the win in relief with eight strikeouts.
Chris Ayer was 2-for-2 with a double for Terryville.
