
Avon pitcher Millan Jain went five innings and struck out three in Friday night’s American Legion baseball loss to Winsted. He allowed five runs but just two were earned.
WINSTED, July 12 – The Johnson brothers – Thomas and Robert – were a combined 5 for 6 at the plate with one RBI to lead the Winsted American Legion baseball team to a 5-1 Zone 1 victory over Avon Friday night at Walker Field.
The victory gives Post 43 (12-12) a three-game sweep over Avon. The two teams played three games on three consecutive evenings. Winsted beat Avon on Thursday night, 9-0 at Buckingham Field with Thomas Johnson ripping a triple.
On Friday night, Robert Johnson was 3-for-3 at the plate while Thomas Johnson was 2-for-3 as Winsted rapped out eight hits to win for the fifth time in the last six games. Pitched Nolan Morr went the distance to pick up the win, scattering nine Avon hits and striking out three.
Max Raha (2-4), Emmett Borenstein (2-3) and Jackson Chard (2-3) each had two hits for Avon, which has lost four consecutive games.
On Thursday night, Winsted pitchers Ryley Weiss and Cameron Wilheim combined to strike out eight and limit Avon (6-16, 6-13) to just three singles to Chard, Miles Borenstein and Matt Leopold.
Winsted took advantage of 12 walks from the Avon pitching staff that also hit two batters.
Joseph Grantmeyer was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Winsted while Mike Bobinski was 2-for-3.
Avon hosts Simsbury on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Buckingham Field.
