McNally scores four goals as Canton rolls past Somers, 8-1 in season opener

SOMERS, September 13 – Senior Fiona McNally scored a career-high four goals as the Canton High field hockey team opened the 2019 campaign with an 8-1 victory over Somers in North Central Connecticut Conference play on Friday.

Senior Ashley Huff had two goals while senior Abby Charron and junior Leighton Antarsh each had one goal for the Warriors (1-0, 1-0 NCCC). Antarsh had four assists while Charron had two assists.

Huff got the scoring early, putting Canton on the board with just 2:34 gone in the game off an assist from Antarsh. McNally made it 2-0 with 19:57 left in the first half while Huff scored again five minutes later for a 3-0 advantage. McNally scored with 9:02 left in the first half to give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage. Somers’ Taylor McCormick scored with 54 seconds left in the first half.

McNally scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half to push the lead to 6-1. Charron and Antarsh scored goals in a span of 14 seconds with 11:44 left in the game.

Canton scored eight goals last year in an 8-2 win over E.O. Smith last October. Canton has won 13 straight over the Spartans, dating back to the 2012 season.

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday when they host defending NCCC champion Granby on the turf field at the high school beginning at 7 p.m.
