Avon’s Mareen Ek, Paul Netland, Carver Morgan and Jevonte Eaves participated in the State Open indoor track and field championships in New Haven on Feb. 19.
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 19, 2022 – Two athletes from Avon and one from Canton finished in the top six of their respective events at the State Open indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven and will advance to the New England championships.
Avon’s Carver Morgan and Paul Netland qualified to participate in the New England championships on Saturday, March 5, at the Reggie Lewis Center in the Roxbury section of Boston along with Canton hurdler Nate Cournean.
Morgan ran a great race in the 1,600 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 4:21.16, nearly four seconds better than his seed time of 4:35.04.
Netland finished fifth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.11 seconds, just ahead of Cournean in sixth place with a time of 8.20 seconds. Lewis Mills’ Michael Johnson won the race and the state championship with a time of 7.53 seconds.
Netland set a new school record in qualifying with his run of 8.09 seconds.
Avon’s Mareen Ek ran in the 1,600 meters and was 12th with a time of 5:24.56, just a quarter second off her personal best. Jevonte Eaves came within a half second of his personal best in the 600 meters when he ran a time of 1:26.74, good enough to finish 14th.
Canton’s Tommie Barker finished 11th in the shot with a throw of 31-11 feet. John Rottkamp was 17th in the pole vault with a leap of 10-6 feet.
