Avon ‘9’ slip past Farmington, 3-2; Homers lift Patriots past Canton

AVON, April 28, 2023 – Michael Prisco’s two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in the winning run as the Avon High baseball team rallied to beat Farmington on Friday, 3-2.

Avon’s Luke Coppen drew a two-out walk from reliever Sanjay Patel in the sixth and scored on Prisco’s double to center field as the Falcons improved to 7-3 on the season.

Avon took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to another two-out rally. David Pengel singled and Coppen was hit by a pitch. Prisco reached on an error and Pengel scored. Coppen gave Avon a two-run lead, scoring on a RBI single from Chase Beloin.

Farmington (3-5) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Chad Rizzo reached base on a bunt single and Ty Nogiec walked. Rizzo scored on Thomas Keough’s single to left field and Nogiec scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Falcons got out of the inning thanks to a double play. Tanner Tedesco’s fly ball to centerfield was caught by Pengel, who threw it home to catcher James Walsh, who tagged out Keough, who was trying to score from third base.

Prisco and Beloin were each 3-for-4 for the Falcons with one RBI. Three Falcon pitchers combined to fan eight. Reliver Ethan Lavore struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning to secure the save.

Coventry 16, Canton 5
CANTON, April 28, 2023 – Gavin Covell hit a pair of home runs Friday to help the Coventry High baseball team beat Canton, 16-5, in a North Central Connecticut Conference game at Bowdoin Field.

Covell, who had just two hits and drove in five runs, hit both home runs over the left field fence. The Patriots (7-3) hit four home runs in the game. Brandon White had a solo home run in the first inning to left field with Evan Menzel also clearing the fences with a solo shot over the center field fence.

Canton (6-5) had 13 hits but couldn’t pick up any ground on the Patriots, who led 6-0 in the second inning. Jake Dest was 3-for-3 with a double one RBI for the Warriors while Sammy Lincoln was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Max Sedor also ripped a double.

Lewis Mills 8, Tolland 7
BURLINGTON, April 28, 2023 – Ben Rewenko hit a double and home run while driving in three runs to lead the Lewis Mills baseball team to a CCC victory over Tolland on Friday, 8-7. Rewenko had a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Spartans the lead for good.

Matt Chirumbolo got the win in relief, retiring three of four batters in the top of the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Cam Fisher allowed six hits and two earned runs for Mills to earn the victory.

Lewis Mills’  Zach Jones was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two RBI while Jayden Longdin scored two runs in the game.
