Coppen, Falcons slip past NW Catholic; Canton races past Wamogo

WEST HARTFORD, April 24, 2023 – Pitchers Luke Coppen and Harry Engle combined to give up one hit and strike out 12 to lead the Avon High baseball team to a 2-0 win over Northwest Catholic on Monday.

Coppen pitched five shutout innings, gave up one hit and fanned six. Engle pitched two innings and struck out six to earn his first save of the year.

Avon (6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out single from Jacob Wirth, who drove in Coppen, who had singled and stole second and third base.

Coppen’s RBI single in the seventh gave the Falcons an additional cushion. Coppen singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice from Nick Meltser and scored on a RBI single from Ben Priest.

Avon returns to action on Wednesday with a game at No. 7 Southington beginning at 3:45 p.m. at Fontana Field at Southington High.

CANTON, April 24, 2023 – Pitcher Rob Dlubac gave up three hits and struck out six to lead the Canton High baseball team to a 10-0 win over Wamogo in non-league play Monday at Bowdoin Field. Dlubac pitched a complete game and improved to 4-1 on the season.

The Warriors (5-4) stole 12 bases in the game, led by Dlubac with three stolen bases including one successful steal of home plate. Sammy Lincoln stole two bases.

Nate Hiscox was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI for the Warriors with Lincoln also going 2-for-3. Max Sedor had a RBI double while Dlubac had a RBI triple.
