Canton’s Heather Delbone (21) had three goals in Tuesday’s win over Granby.
On Sunday, Canton High girls lacrosse Sean Cole was feeling pretty good about his Warriors after a 10-6 loss to No. 10 New Fairfield on Friday afternoon.
Canton led by two goals in the second half before the Rebels, who have won the last five Class S championships, scored the final six goals of the game.
Cole had much different feelings on Tuesday after a 19-10 loss to Somers, a team that Canton had beaten in 12 of their last 14 meetings.
Things are better today in the Warrior lacrosse world after Canton handed Granby their first NCCC loss of the season with an 11-8 decision on Tuesday. The Warriors held the Bears to just three goals in the second half and limited their outstanding shooter Makenna Cassin to just one goal.
“Everything was better,” Cole said. “As disappointed as we were (on Monday), we flipped the switch (on Tuesday against Granby) with energy, effort, attitude and teamwork.”
Canton (4-2, 3-1 NCCC) spread the ball out offensively with six players scoring goals. Heather Delbone led the way with three goals and an assist with Gabby Delsanto, Ellie Bahre and Mary DeRitis each scoring two goals. DeRitis had six assists and has reached 100 points in her career.
With the two goals, Delsanto reached 100 goals in her career. She has 22 goals and eight assists in six games this season for the Warriors.
(Against Somers), our energy and effort was woefully lacking,” Cole said. “We did something about it today. We played like we did against New Fairifield.”
Alyssa Mackowski led Granby (6-2, 3-2 NCCC) with three goals while Zoe Kelly added two.
The Warriors returns to action on Thursday when they face Rockville on the road before another challenging game on Saturday against North Branford (5-1) at 1:30 p.m. on the turf field in Canton.
