The Yard Goats used a four-run fourth inning and another big game from Julio Carreras to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-3 on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,611 fans at Dunkin’ Park. Yard Goats starting pitcher Connor Staine worked five strong innings, while Carreras homered for the second straight game and drove in three runs to help the Yard Goats close the homestand with a victory. Trailing 2-0, Hartford scored four runs in the fourth inning. Jared Thomas walked and scored on Charlie Condon’s RBI triple to put Hartford on the board. Roc Riggio followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2. Jose Cordova doubled, Benny Montgomery ripped an RBI double, and Julio Carreras lined an RBI single to left, giving Hartford a 4-2 lead. Carreras extended the lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left-center field, making it 5-2. In the eighth inning, Juan Guerrero singled, stole two bases, and scored on a fielder’s choice by Cordova. Carreras then added his third RBI of the game with a single to center, scoring Riggio for a 7-2 lead. Connor Staine earned the victory, allowing just two runs on three hits over five innings, while Juarez picked up his fourth save. Staine retired the side in order in the second and fifth innings while recording his third victory.

Former Sun guard DiJonai Carrington had 18 points, three assists and three steals as the Minnesota Lynx rolled to a 94-70 win over the Connecticut Sun on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 8910 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Alanna Smith had 18 points for the Lynx (31-8) while former UConn star Naphessa Collier had 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Minnesota shot 51 percent from the floor while the Sun shot just 36.2 percent had a season-low three steals. Tina Charles led the Sun (10-29) with 14 points and eight rebounds while Marina Mabrey added 14 points and four rebounds. Aaliyah Edwards had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench for Connecticut, her highest scoring total with the Sun so far.

Four Hartford pitchers combined to strike out a franchise-record 19 batters but the Yard Goats fell in 10 innings, 4-3 to Portland in front of 7,135 on Saturday night at Dunkin’ Park. Hartford erased two late Portland leads, including a game-tying home run by Julio Carreras in the ninth, but a tenth-inning sacrifice fly from Portland proved to be the difference. Konner Eaton was brilliant in his first start at Dunkin’ Park, striking out a career high 12 batters across five innings on 81 pitches. His 12 strikeouts were one shy of tying the Yard Goats franchise record. The Sea Dogs jumped ahead in the first inning when Ronald Rosario hit a two-run home run, giving Portland a 2-0 lead. The Yard Goats answered in the bottom half of the first when Charlie Condon hit into an RBI groundout, cutting the Portland lead to 2-1. Hartford tied the game in the seventh when Jared Thomas roped an RBI single, tying the game 2-2. Thomas drove in Cole Carrigg, who bunted for a single and then stole second in the prior at-bat. Portland reclaimed the lead in the ninth when Marvin Alcantara hit a solo home run, giving the Sea Dogs a 3-2 advantage. The Yard Goats wasted no time in the bottom half of the ninth, as Carreras blasted a lead-off solo home run off Portland reliever Jeremy Wu-Yelland, tying the game 3-3 and forcing extra innings. Juan Chacon hit a sacrifice fly in the tenth, putting the Sea Dogs ahead 4-3. Hartford reliever Wilnton Herrerra struck out five batters in two innings of work.

Hartford (8-8-3) scored two goals in the final eight minutes to beat North Carolina in USL Championship play and remain undefeated (7-0-1) in their last eight games. Hartford tied the game at 2-2 when Michee Ngalina shot from just inside the 18-year penalty box and deflected the ball off a North Carolina defender Tristian Dodge with four minutes left in regulation. In extra time, Hartford’s Emmanuel Samadia served a perfect corner kick into the box in the 93rd minute. Adrían Diz Pe soared above everyone else to get a head on it and redirect the ball into the far corner, well out of reach of NC goalie Oliver Semmle for his first goal of the season.

The Portland Sea Dogs erupted for six runs in the first inning, which was enough to lead them to a 6-2 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats on Friday night at Dunkin’ Park. Benny Montgomery and Jose Cordova each cranked solo home runs for the Yard Goats who have dropped three of the first four games to Portland. The Sea Dogs scored all six runs in the first inning against starter Jack Mahoney. However, the right-hander settled down and retired 11 consecutive hitters, including the side in order in the second through fourth innings. He went five innings and threw 90 pitches.

Rookie guard Saniya Rivers and rookie forward Aneesah Morrow each tallied 11 points to round of the Sun’s double-digit scorers. Dallas (9-30) played without No. 1 draft pick Paige Bueckers, out with an illness, and lost their sixth straight game. Jared Thomas delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Hartford Yard Goats rallied past the Portland Sea Dogs 9-8 at Dunkin’ Park. Hartford trailed by two runs in the 11th before storming back to tie the game on Cole Carrigg’s two-run single and then winning it on Thomas’ game-winning hit. The Yard Goats, who overcame a 5-1 deficit in the ninth inning, are a half game out of a playoff spot with 16 games remaining in the regular season.
Trailing 5-1 in the ninth inning with two outs and the bases empty the Yard Goats scored four runs off the Sea Dogs bullpen. Braylen Wimmer had a RBI double, Dyan Jorge had a RBI single, and Nic Kent tied the game with a clutch two-run single, forcing extra innings. After both teams scored a run in the 10th inning, Portland scored two runs in the 11th inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Drew Ehrhard and Ronaldo Hernandez, taking an 8-6 lead. Hartford refused to give up. With two outs in the bottom of the 11th, Carrigg blooped a game-tying two-run single. Thomas followed by lining the walk-off RBI single to right center, scoring Kent to end the game.

Jared Thomas had a multi-hit night, but the Hartford Yard Goats lost to the Portland Sea Dogs 6-2 in front of 6,189 fans at Dunkin’ Park. Thomas’ two-hit performance included an RBI double in the third inning and a single in the ninth. Charlie Condon’s 22-game on-base streak ended tonight after mashing four homers in six games against Somerset. The Yard Goats, Sea Dogs and Somerset Patriots are all within 2.5 games of each other for a playoff spot in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division with 17 games to play. Whomever finishes first among Hartford, Portland and Somerset in the Northeast Division will face first half winner Binghamton in the playoffs. Somerset currently has a half-game lead on Hartford and 2.5 game lead over Portland.

Sun’s Charles honored by WNBA
Connecticut’s Tina Charles was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week after helping the Sun to their first three-game winning streak of the season with victories over Washington (twice) and Chicago. In the three wins, Charles averaged 19.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. She had 13 points and nine rebounds in a 80-69 win over Washington on August 19. Two days later, Charles had a team-leading 21 points, points. Six rebounds and two steals in a 67-56 win over the Mystics. On Saturday, Aug. 23, Charles had 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 94-84 win over Chicago with her 200th career double-double.

Lacan finished with a career-high 22 points, three rebounds and three assists for Connecticut (9-28) Lacan had two steals for the 13th time in a Sun uniform this season. After a steal, Lacan had a chance to tie the ballgame but Ionescu blocked her shot. The Sun trailed by as many as 17 in the game but rallied late to get a shot to win.

Yard Goats infielder Nic Kent cranked a solo home run, and starter Konner Eaton and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout 1-0 victory against the Somerset Patriots on Sunday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. The Yard Goats won five of six games against the second place Patriots to move within a half game of a playoff spot with 18 games remaining in the regular season. The Yard Goats open an important six-game homestand against third-place Portland on Tuesday (7:10 PM) at Dunkin’ Park.
The Yard Goats scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning as Nic Kent smashed his fourth home run, a leadoff blast over the left field fence off Somerset starter Carlos Lagrange. It is the second time this week that the Yard Goats beat the top pitching prospect in the Yankees organization. Konner Eaton was called up from Class-A Spokane and pitched five solid innings for the Yard Goats to earn the win in his Double-A debut. The left-hander worked around traffic early in the game before retiring 11 of the final 12 batters faced including the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings. The Patriots only had one hit after the third inning.

Hartford has won the first three games of the series to move within 1.5 games of Somerset for a playoff spot with 21 games remaining in the regular season. In game one, the Yard Goats broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning on a fielding error by Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. which allowed Cole Carrigg to score. In game two, Charlie Condon smashed two homers and had 3 RBI in a 5-3 victory. Dyan Jorge broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning on a two-out single, scoring Benny Montgomery giving the Yard Goats the lead. In game one, Somerset scored the first run of the game on three straight hits against Yard Goats starting pitcher Connor Staine. The New Jersey native settled down and retired the next 12 batters faced, including the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings. After leaving runners in scoring position in the three previous innings, Hartford would cash in and score three runs to tie the game on five consecutive hits in the seventh. The Yard Goats scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Jose Cordova hit a ground ball that shortstop George Lombard Jr. couldn’t handle and Carrigg came in giving Harford a 4-3 lead. Reliever Austin Smith got all three batters faced for the save. In game two, Hartford broke the 3-3 tie on a two out single by Jorge in the sixth inning against reliever Hayden Merda, scoring Benny Mongomery to make it 4-3. Condon smashed a solo homer in the seventh to give the Yard Goats a 5-3 lead. Yard Goats relievers Mason Green and Victor Juarez fired three scoreless to end the game.

Relievers Welinton Herrera and Bryce McGowan finished the final three innings as the Yard Goats recorded their first shutout win since July 30. Brown retired 18 of 20 batters faced and only allowed a walk and single while earning his fourth win of the season. The Yard Goats (22-23 second half) are now within 3.5 games of the N.Y. Yankees affiliate, Somerset (26-20), for the final playoff spot in the Northeast Division with 23 games remaining. The Yard Goats scored three runs in the second inning off Yankees top pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange. Benny Montgomery started the rally with a leadoff single, followed by a single by Bryant Betancourt and a walk to Braylin Wimmer. Jose Cordova’s ground ball double play scored Montgomery, giving Hartford a 1-0 lead. However, the Yard Goats continued to add on with two out. Dyan Jorge came up with an RBI single scoring Betancourt and Cole Carrigg contributed with a double, scoring Jorge and giving the Yard Goats a 3-0 lead.

Connecticut 80, Washington 69
At Washington
With a big assist from the bench, the Connecticut Sun beat the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night in Washington, 80-69 at CareFirst Arena. Saniya Rivers led the Sun (7-27) with 17 points and four rebounds while Olivia Nelson-Ododa had 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Both Rivers and Nelson-Ododa came off the bench. Tina Charles added 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds. The Sun recorded a season-high 45 bench points in the game, as they snapped their 13-game road-game losing streak with the victory. The Mystics (16-19) were led by Sonia Citron with 19 points and three assists. Shakira Austin followed with 12 points and seven rebounds. Jade Melbourne rounded out their double-digit scorers with 11 points and four assists. The two teams meet again on Thursday in Uncasville.
