It takes seven innings for Cheshire to eliminate Simsbury Little League squad

Simsbury pitcher Daniel Cerreta pitched into the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s state tournament in North Haven.

Cheshire scored four runs with one out in the seventh inning to eliminate Simsbury, 5-2 in the Little League baseball Major Division Section I tournament on Wednesday night in North Haven.

For the second time in four days, the two teams met each other. And for the second time, they two teams had to play extra innings to determine a victor. On Sunday, it was Simsbury (9-3) with the one-run victory.

This time, Cheshire was able to build a big enough lead to hold off Simsbury

Tied at 1-1, Cheshire’s Ryder Keiling had a one-out triple to right field that drove in Jameson Hoke, who began the inning at second base. In extra innings, teams begin with a runner on second base.

With two outs, Asher Corcoran singled to right field to drive in two runs for a 4-1 lead. Another run came in on Grant Filek’s double to right field for a 5-1 lead.

Simsbury picked up another run when Brendan Hodgson scored on an infield ground ball but that is as close as they would get.

Cheshire took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run from Baxter Dvarskas but Simsbury responded immediately.

Hodgson led off the bottom of the first inning for Simsbury with a triple to right field and scored on a ground ball to second by Caleb Weinberg to tie the game at 1-1.

Cheshire loaded the bases in the second inning thanks to three consecutive singles but starting pitcher Daniel Cerreta (3-1) got a ground ball to third base to end the threat. Cerreta went 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, striking out three and walking none.

Hodgson went 2-3 for Simsbury with two runs scored while Weinberg and Russell each had one RBI.
