Voters in Canton approved a proposed town budget of $52.8 million on Tuesday night by a little more than 100 votes. The budget received 1,180 votes in favor and 972 votes against, according to figures released by town officials.
It was the third vote on the budget. Two previous votes had failed by a margin of 1,447 to 796 on May 14 and 1,303 to 1,049 on June 2.
According to documents provided by the town, the approved budget is 3.97 percent higher than the current town budget.
Town officials cut $1.3 million from the budget after the first defeat and another $950,000 from the budget after the second rejection by the voters.
Following the defeat of the second budget proposal, town officials lowered the proposed town budget with $150,000 coming from the Board of Selectman’s budget, $350,000 coming from the town’s capital improvement budget, $400,000 from the Board of Education’s proposed budget and $50,000 coming from the Board of Finance.
Information provided by town officials discuss the services and programs that will be cut or eliminated. These cuts were put into place after the second defeat of the budget.
The second budget proposal was 5.84 percent higher than the current town budget.
