Simsbury blanks Farmington, 16-0 for fourth straight win

Nasir Gouldbourne (2) runs during Friday night’s CCC Tier III win over Farmington at George T. Bennett Field.

FARMINGTON, Oct. 9, 2026 – Over the past three seasons, the Simsbury High football has struggled on the field with just four wins in 30 games.

New head coach Jim Caouette and his coaching staff were determined to turn that around.

At the midway point of the 2026 season, Simsbury is 4-1 with four straight wins for the first time since 2019, the last time that the Trojan program qualified for the CIAC playoffs.

Hard-hitting Simsbury faced off with Farmington for the first time since 2014 on Friday night and came away with a 16-0 victory.

It’s the longest winning streak for Simsbury since winning 11 in a row from 2018 into the 2019 campaign.

Three big plays boosted the Trojans. On Simsbury’s first offensive play of the game, QB Braeden Siano found Aaron Blecher behind a Farmington defensive back for a 67-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.

Simsbury’s Jesse Carst and Kayveon Long sacked Farmington QB Mason Kiniry for a safety in the second quarter to extend the lead to 9-0 and the Trojans marched 60 yards on seven plays on the opening drive of the third quarter to take a 16-0 lead.

Simsbury running back Nasir Gouldbourne ran for a game-high 118 yards on 23 carries, breaking tackles on several of his runs. Greyson Goetz ran for 41 yards on seven carries.

Siano completed 17-of-29 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns with Blecher catching six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Bryan George caught three passes for 23 yards while Gouldbourne caught two passes for 42 yards.

“To get to four wins (in the first five weeks of the season) after winning just four games in (three) years is great for these kids and the senior class,” Simsbury coach Jim Caouette said. “We came here to build something and build a program. So proud of my kids and more importantly, proud of my coaches. They got these kids ready to play.”

Simsbury QB Braeden Siano (10) celebrates with teammates after the Trojans scored on their first offensive play of the game with a 67-yard touchdown pass.

In their preparation for the game reviewing film of the River Hawks, the Simsbury coaching staff saw an opening and took advantage on their first offensive play.

“We had a run play called but depending on where the corner was we were going to go deep and we took the top off,” he said.

Added Siano, “There is no better way to start a game than by throwing a touchdown.”

Farmington marched to the Simsbury 30-yard line in the first quarter but the drive ended when Kayveon Long intercepted Kiniry to stop the drive one play after Brett Osborne sacked Kiniry for a six-yard loss.

Simsbury marched 77 yards on 16 plays to the Farmington one before their drive stalled. Grayson Wagner had a 13-yard reception on the drive while Greyson Goetz had a big 17-yard run down to the Farmington 20-yard line.

Simsbury didn’t score but it set up the Trojan defense for their first safety of the season with Carst and Long sacking Kiniry for an eight-yard loss, two points and a 9-0 lead.

Simsbury opened the third quarter with an impressive drive. Siano completed a 15-yard pass to Bryan George for a first down and completed a 26-yard pass to Blecher for a first down to the River Hawk 15-yard line. Two plays later, Siano completed a nine-yard TD pass to Cole Roberts for a 16-0 lead.

Farmington recovered a Siano fumble with 7:48 left in the game and took over on their own 48-yard line. Sophomore QB Colton Anderson drove the River Hawks into the red zone (inside the 20-yard line).

A 15-yard pass from Anderson to Chris Huelin moved the ball to the Simsbury 17-yard line. A eight-yard run by Titus Lynne moved to the ball to the nine-yard line with six minutes left in the game but the drive stalled and Simsbury taking over on the nine with 5:14 left in the game.

“This (win) means everything,” Gouldbourne said. “This right here, this is just family. Everything here, just winning, it just brings you joy. Everything about here is just amazing. Yeah, new coaching staff (this season), an amazing head coach, amazing new players. I have a great quarterback, great (offensive) line, great wide receivers, great defense. Everything is put together this year.”

“It was going to be a battle,” Farmington High coach Chris Machol said. “You like to learn lessons with wins. Hopefully, we learned lessons in a loss. There are things that we did this week that we didn’t practice as well as we probably should have. There are things we worked on that we got beat on. We gave them one (touchdown) early by doing something we talked about not doing.”

Due to injuries, the River Hawks (3-2) were missing three starters from their offense in the second half including quarterback Mason Kiniry, a receiver and running back. They shouldn’t be out for long and having a bye week next week will be helpful.

“It’s tough. They (Simsbury) are a good physical team. They’ve got a senior-heavy team and we’re young in certain areas and they took advantage of those areas.”
