BERLIN — Just once day after turning in its highest score of the season, the undefeated Berlin High girls golf team had its lowest score of the season Thursday to hand Avon its first loss of the season.
Led by medalist Julia Kemmling with an even par 36 at Timberlin Golf Course in Berlin, the host Redcoats beat Avon, 171-198. East Catholic was a distance third with 226.
Kemmling outdueled Avon’s Marissa Grillo, who shot a 38. Kemmling had two birdies and five pars. Avon slips to 7-1 on the season.
Just 24 hours earlier, the two-time defending state champion Redcoats had shot a 195 in windy conditions in a win over Newington at Indian Hill Country Club in Newington.
On Wednesday, Avon improved to 6-0 and 5-0 in the SCGGL with a season-low 186 at the Golf Club of Avon to beat Northwest Catholic (191) and Canton (220). Grillo and teammate Alana Pulling shared medalist honors with a 41.
Canton wins home opener
SIMSBURY – In its first match of the on its home course at Tower Ridge in Simsbury, the Warriors (2-4, 1-3 SCGGL) won with a 239-246 win over Hand-Madison in Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League play. Canton sophomore Gianna Cassetta earned medalist honors for the first time this season with a 52. Junior Dana Nelson had a 57 while junior Zoey Van Kirk shot a 62.
Canton had a season-low 220 on Wednesday but fell to Avon (186) and Northwest Catholic (191) at the Golf Club of Avon.

Avon remains undefeated
AVON – Senior Ryan Karobowicz earned medalist honors for the second straight match as the Falcons remained undefeated with a 162-171 win over Granby at Blue Fox Run. Avon is 6-0 on the year and 5-0 in the league. Avon has won 11 straight matches since dropping a match to Lewis Mills last May.
Canton picks up win
CANTON – The Warriors picked up their first win of the season earlier this week with a 180-197 win over Stafford. Junior Parker Lyons of Canton earned medalist honors, shooting a 40 at Quineboag Country Club in Monson, Mass. Canton is 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.
