The District 6 Little League baseball tournament concludes this weekend in Thomaston and five area teams are playing this week for a chance to advance to the state tournament.
Simsbury Americans and Terryville each went 4-0 in the round robin portion of the Major Division tournament (ages 11-12) while Avon, Burlington and Granby each went 3-1 to earn a spot in the double elimination portion of the D6 tournament.
Eight other teams, including Canton (2-2) and Simsbury Nationals (2-2), went home after four games.
Barring any rain, the championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Thomaston. A second game, if needed, will be played Sunday in Thomaston, also at 1 p.m. The winner of the District 6 tournament earns a berth in the six-team Section II tournament, a double-elimination event being held in Harwinton beginning next Wednesday, July 17, each evening at 5:30 p.m.
Champions from District 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will also be participating. The Section II champion faces off against the Section I champion in a best-of-3 series to determine the state championship.
Burlington outlasted Granby, 12-11 to open the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Sunday. On Monday night, Avon handed Simsbury Americans its first loss of the summer with a 5-3 decision, moving one victory away from its 10th straight appearance in the D6 tournament finals.
On Tuesday night, Burlington beat Terryville, 12-1. On Thursday night, Granby and the Simsbury Americans play an elimination game at 7 p.m. in Terryville with the loser going home. Avon faces Burlington on Thursday night in Harwinton at 5:45 p.m.
Avon is looking for its third straight D6 championship. Avon has played in the last nine D6 title games and has won six times. Avon won its first-ever Section II title a year ago with a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Guilford and earn a berth in the state finals against the Fairfield Americans. Fairfield swept two games from Avon (13-2) to win its second straight state title.
The most recent D6 championship for the Simsbury Americans was in 2010, when they beat Avon by two runs in the final. Terryville is looking for its appearance in the final since 2000, when they beat Torrington Nationals to win the D6 crown. Burlington was in the finals last year and lost to Avon, 16-2. Granby’s last appearance in the finals was 1999.
SOFTBALL: Simsbury’s trip to the Section II state tournament lasted only two games. The District 6 champions lost to Rocky Hill, 8-5 in its opening game and was eliminated by Preston/Jewett City, 2-0. Simsbury, which won its second D6 title in two years with a thrilling 4-3 decision over Avon earlier this month, finishes the summer with a record of 7-3.
