AVON, Nov. 3 – The Avon High volleyball team looked good in its first round Class L contest with New Canaan Monday night. The No. 12 Falcons swept the visiting Rams, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-13 to set up a second round contest at No. 5 Joel Barlow in Redding on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Avon (18-6) received some nice hitting from Abby Laszewski (15 kills), Sammy Maniatty (3 kills) and Olivia Hart (3 kills). Setter Brooke Fisher (3 service aces) did a good job setting up the offense with 21 assists and the Falcons passed the ball pretty well. Della Hellwig had 14 digs while Caitlin Cunningham had seven digs.

New Canaan (9-10) struggled to receive serve, especially in game one and game three, allowing Avon to build comfortable leads.

“We seem to be playing our best volleyball at this time of year,” Avon coach Curt Burns said. “Our goal is to have a strong week and be playing next week. We’re just going to take it one game at time now.”

Avon's Abby Laszewski (15) and Abby Lancaster (16) can't stop a hit from New Canaan's Chiara Piccoli in Monday's Class L game in Avon.

Avon has won seven of its last eight matches. They weren’t pushed as hard as they were in Saturday’s 3-2 semifinal win over Coventry or its 3-1 loss to Granby in the NCCC Tournament championship game. But there were no complaints from the Falcons.

Avon gets another chance to play No. 5 Joel Barlow (20-2), which won its third straight Southwest Conference championship on Saturday, beating top-ranked Masuk in the tournament semifinals.

The Falcons played well two years ago when they challenged Barlow, then the No. 1 seed in Class L, before being eliminated in the second round. A win could put Avon in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2010.
