
Avon senior Olivia Welter and the Falcons have earned a share of their fourth NCCC championship in the last five years.
AVON – The big win in front of the big crowd and television cameras came last Friday when the Avon High girls basketball team outscored Canton, 19-5 in the final 11 minutes of regulation to earn a 13-point victory and put themselves in position to win a fourth league championship in five years.
Over the past two days, the Falcons have taken care of business.
Avon (16-4, 16-2 NCCC) won a piece of the NCCC championship in its final season in the league Tuesday night with a dominating 53-28 win over East Windsor. Senior Shannon Curry led the way with 13 points while 6-foot-3 junior Abby Laszewski added 11 points. The Falcons led 36-9 at halftime.
On Monday morning, the Falcons dispatched Stafford with a 56-28 victory with a game-high 10 points from Laszewski in her first action of the season. Laszewski, who has verbally committed to play collegiate basketball at the University of Wisconsin, missed 18 games recovering from a foot injury suffered during the volleyball
Avon earned a piece of its fourth NCCC championship in the last five years and its 12th title since 2000. The Falcons will host either Ellington or Hartford Classical on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCCC Tournament.
