NEW HAVEN, Feb. 12 – The Canton High boys track and field team earned its third straight top 10 finish at the Class S indoor track and field championships Thursday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse High.

The Warriors finished fifth for the second straight year with 26 points. Bloomfield won the Class S title with 53 points. Morgan was a distant second with 34 points followed by Plainfield (31) and Haddam-Killingworth (30).

Canton seniors Dean Yost and his brother James Yost each finished second in individual events while the sprint medley relay team also finished second. Leading the way for the Canton girls was junior Lucy Tanner, who finished fifth in the 55 hurdles.

James Yost took second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:09.45. The winner of the race was Haddam-Killingworth’s Cameron Garrelts in 9:54.51. Yost also earned another medal in the 1,600 meters, taking fifth in 4:46.73.

Dean Yost was second in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:40.98, beating his personal best this winter by nearly two seconds. He was more than three seconds behind the winner, Connor Ratte of Coventry in 2:37.48.

Dean Yost did run on Canton’s 1,600 meter sprint medley relay that finished second to Morgan. The Huskies won the race in 3:42.97. Canton (junior John Solomon, sophomore Dustin Van Kirk, senior Riley Hollis, senior Dean Yost) finished with a time of 3:50.11, nearly two seconds better than their previous best time this winter.

Hollis also finished tenth in the long jump for Canton with a leap of 19 feet, 7½ inches.

Tanner, who won the NCCC championship in the 55 hurdles last month, ran a time of 9.53 in qualifying to earn a spot in the finals and was seeded seventh. Her time of 9.33 seconds earned her a fourth place medal — one spot better than her fifth place finish in this event a year ago. Tanner was just 0.01 of a second behind Griswold’s Haley Carpenter in fourth place.

The Canton girls had two relay teams that earned eighth place finishes.

The Warriors’ 4×400 relay team set a new school record with an eighth place finish in 4:31.14, breaking the mark set earlier this winter by another Canton foursome at the Yale Invitational. Canton’s record-setting team consisted of sophomore Amber Harraden, sophomore Abigail Briggs, sophomore Jocelyn Rossitto and Tanner

Canton’s sprint medley relay team of sophomores Emily Mitchell, Elizabeth Raynor, Haraden and Briggs was eighth with a time of 4:44.48.

The Canton girls scored points for just the third time in their history. The Warriors had two points to finish 19th.
