CANTON, May 4 – Kevin Gurry had three of Canton’s 11 hits but undefeated Stafford High baseball team was too strong in an 11-5 NCCC victory Monday at Bowdoin Field.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after four innings and added three more runs to take a 5-0 lead before getting another four runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-0. Stafford (10-0, 9-0 NCCC) was led by Luke Broadhurst, who was 3-for-4 with a double. Winning pitcher Hunter Davis had a single and three RBI. On the mound, Davis gave up 11 hits and struck out three. Only two of the five runs he allowed were earned.

“(Starting pitcher) Ethan Burke pitched extremely well today,” Canton High coach Greg Brisco said. “He left the game after three innings having only let up one run on two hits with four strikeouts. We were in the game having had two innings with multiple guys on base, but we couldn’t get them home. Unfortunately, he developed arm soreness in the 3rd inning, so it was time to make a pitching change.”

Canton (5-6, 4-5 NCCC) was led by Gurry with three singles and one RBI, Ben Sullivan with a triple, single and one RBI and Burke, who had two singles. The Warriors tied a season-high with 11 hits. They also had 11 hits in a 6-4 win over Windsor Locks in April.

It was just the second loss for Canton in their last six games. The Warriors are 4-2 after beginning the season with a 1-4 record.

This was the beginning of a busy four-game stretch for the Warriors this week. Canton travels to Enfield on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest before hosting East Granby on Friday at 4 p.m. at Bowdoin Field. The Warriors close out the week on the road Saturday morning at Somers for an 11 a.m. start.
