Canton girls finish cross country season with 11th victory

The Canton High girls cross country team finished second in the Small Division at the Stratton Brook Invitational Saturday in Simsbury.

Canton, shown earlier this season, went 11-1 in the dual meet portion of the NCCC girls cross country campaign.

SOMERS, Oct. 14 – With five runners in the top 10, the Canton High girls cross country team won three meets Wednesday to finish the dual meet portion of the season with an 11-1 record – its best dual meet record since going 13-0 in 2006.

Emily Briggs finished second, Cameron McCauley took third and Belle Magna was fourth as the Warriors (11-1, 11-1 NCCC) swept Somers, 20-35; Stafford, 21-36; and Enfield, 15-50.

The Warriors finished behind defending league champion Suffield (12-0) in the league. Teams earn one point for each dual meet victory they earn and one point for every team they beat at the league championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Windsor Locks High School. The girls varsity championship race will be at 1:45 p.m. with the boys varsity race following at 2:30 p.m. Two junior varsity races will follow the varsity races.

Canton will compete in Class SS at the CIAC championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Wickham Park in Manchester.

In Wednesday’s boys race, Jake Whittingslow finished second while Ethan Porter (fourth), Zach Oliver (fifth), Matt Sullivan (ninth) and Cam Neeley (tenth) each finished in the top 10 to help Canton (9-3, 9-3 NCCC) sweep Somers, 21-34; Enfield, 22-25 and Stafford, 17-43. Canton will also race in the Class SS championship race at Wickham Park.
