Avon’s Teddy Allemendinger (34) and the Falcons have to win their final two games to remain in contention for the playoffs.
AVON, Nov. 14 – Five of the eight spots in the CIAC’s Class L football tournament are set. Only three spots remain and Avon could be in the running if they can win their final two games against Plainville on Saturday and against Simsbury on Nov. 24.
North Haven (9-0), Warren Harding (9-0), New Canaan (8-0), Torrington (8-1) and Wethersfield (8-1) have unofficially clinched playoff spots according to the CIAC. All five teams won Friday night with Torrington rallying to beat St. Paul in overtime, 42-36.
Windsor (8-0), Middletown (8-1), Notre Dame-West Haven (7-2) and Avon (6-2) are still alive.
Notre Dame-WH can clinch a berth with a win over Hamden (1-8) on Thanksgiving. That realistically leaves Windsor, Middletown and Avon fighting for the final two spots.
If Avon can win its final two games to improve to 8-2, they might have enough points to slide past Middletown providing the Dragons fall to undefeated Windsor on Thanksgiving Eve (Nov. 25). It could come down to bonus points and strength of schedule. For example, Avon earns 10 points for every win by a team that they defeated in the regular season.
An Avon loss to Plainville or Simsbury will eliminate the Falcons from playoff consideration.
Avon last qualified for the Class L playoffs in 2012, dropping a 16-7 loss to New Canaan in the quarterfinals.
