Canton senior Maggie Treacy had a game-high 26 points in Friday night’s win over Hartford Classical.
CANTON, Dec. 18 – The pressure from the Hartford Classical girls basketball team was constant. In the first half, Canton’s Emily Briggs was on a roll, scoring 16 of her 24 points. In the second half, teammate Maggie Treacy scored 20 of her game-high 26 points.
With help from their teammates, the Warriors won their home opener with a 63-46 decision in North Central Connecticut Conference play Friday night.
“It was a nice team victory,” Canton coach Brian Medieros said. “They played with great energy, rebounded and defended well in the half court. Multiple kids stepped up, making big plays throughout the game. I truly believe the girls are playing with a lot more confidence and trust with one another.”
Canton (2-0, 2-0 NCCC) took an early 13-4 lead but the Gladiators (2-1, 1-1 NCCC) were never too far away. “No lead ever seemed safe as Classical mounted a comeback with their relentless full court and half court pressure,” Medieros said. “We had some great spurts where we made enough plays on offense and defense to hold them off. But (Classical) forced us out of our comfort zone as we committed too many unforced turnovers.”
Briggs pulled down 16 rebounds and hit a pair of three-point shots for Canton while Treacy was 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the second half. Treacy also pulled down nine rebounds, had eight steals and five assists. Abbe Skinner added six points for the Warriors. Sarah Bowman had six blocks to help out at the defensive end of the court Classical was led by Kylah Langston with 18 points and Kayla Soto with 10.
Canton hits the court again on Monday night when they host New Fairfield (2-0) at 7 p.m. The Rebels went 24-2 a year ago in the Southwest Conference before being eliminated in the Class L semifinals by Northwest Catholic. Senior guard Emily Farrell, who averaged 13.5 points a game, leads the Rebels, who return a majority of last year’s team.
The Warriors will travel to Hartford on Tuesday night to face Sport Medicine Science Academy (SMSA) at 7 p.m. in their final game before the Christmas holiday break.
