Canton ‘9’ wins another one-run ballgame by holding off Windsor Locks, 6-5

Baseball ImageWINDSOR LOCKS, April 28 – The Canton High baseball team pulled out another tense contest Thursday. Reliever Jake Schaetzel struck out two batters with runners on first and third base in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Warriors to a 6-5 win over Windsor Locks in NCCC action.

It was the fourth straight win for Canton and third consecutive one-run victory for the Warriors. Canton (5-3, 4-3 NCCC) began the week with an 8-7 win over Granby in 10 innings on Monday followed by a 2-1 decision over Coventry on Wednesday. Canton concludes a busy week with a game at Stafford on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Canton led by four in the fourth inning, 4-0, and by three in the sixth inning, 6-3. But the Raiders (3-6, 2-6 NCCC) refused to go away. They scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to one run. But Schaetzel shut the door to earn his first save of the season.

Four Canton pitchers combined to scatter seven hits and strike out seven. They gave up just two earned runs.

Canton took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Schaetzel’s (3-for-4) RBI double drove in Trey VandeBogart. Sam Beadle followed up with another double, driving in Schaetzel for a 4-0 lead. Beadle was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the game.

The Warriors added single runs in the fourth and fifth inning and made it 6-3 in the sixth on Nate Fulham’s RBI single. Canton scored six runs despite fanning 14 times against Locks starter Tim Pfaffenbichler, who went seven innings and allowed 10 hits.
