CANTON, April 27 – Jake Schaetzel hit a two-run home run in the first inning and pitcher Ethan Burke shutout down the visiting Patriots as the Canton High baseball team earned its third straight win with a 2-1 decision over Coventry in NCCC play at Bowdoin Field.
Burke and reliever Nate Fulham limited Coventry (5-2, 5-2 NCCC) to just three hits and one run. Burke fanned six and walked just two in 6 1/3 innings of work. Fulham got two outs to earn the save. The victory snapped a four-game winning streak for Coventry.
Canton (4-3, 3-3 NCCC) took the lead in the first inning. Trey Van deBogart reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on Schaetzel’s two-run home run. Sam Beadle had a single and double for the Warriors.
Coventry made the Warriors earn the win in the top of the seventh inning. The Patriots pushed a run across and had runners on first and third bases with two outs. But Fulham picked off a Coventry runner leading too far off third base to end the contest.
