CANTON, April 26 – It was cold and raining Tuesday afternoon when the Canton High boys and girls track and field teams hosted Hartford Classical and Enfield.
Canton’s baseball team didn’t play. Neither did softball or tennis. But the track athletes were out competing in the elements. Why? Because at the upcoming CIAC championship meets at the end of May, the event is on rain or shine. Only lightning stops the action.
Last year, the Warriors competed in a torrential downpour in the Class S championships. They had to compete. So, Tuesday’s three-team meet was a good test for a potential miserable weather day at the state championship meet.
The Canton boys did well, overwhelming Hartford Classical, 110-40, and Enfield, 121-29, to extend their school record dual meet winning streak to 74 consecutive dual meet victories dating back to the beginning of the 2011 campaign. On the girls side, Canton swept Hartford Classical, 96-46, and Enfield, 120-15, to improve to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the NCCC.
At the boys meet, Canton (9-0, 8-0 NCCC) won 12 of 18 events with Dustin Van Kirk (110 hurdles, triple jump) and Will Briggs (shot, discus) each winning multiple individual events. Other individual winners for the Warriors were John Solomon (400), Peter Royer (800), Cam Neeley (3,200), Cameron Lange (long jump), Stephen Oliver (pole vault) and Will Carlson (javelin).
Briggs had a big throw of 156 feet in the discus while Carlson threw the javelin 131-9 feet. Oliver cleared 11 feet to win the pole vaults. The Warriors also won the 4×800 relay.
In the girls competition, Canton won 16 of 18 events with Lucy Tanner (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump), Emily Mitchell (100, 200, long jump) and Amber Harraden (javelin, shot, 400) each winning three events.
Other individual winners for Canton included Jane Frawley (1,600), Emily Briggs (3,200), Abby Skinner (triple jump, high jump), Elizabeth Raynor (pole vault) and Jennah Roman (high jump). Three Canton athletes tied in the high jump with a leap of 4-4.
In other team scores, Enfield beat Classical 59-56 among the boys while Classical dominated Enfield, 88½ to 22½ in the girls competition.
Canton returns to the track on Tuesday when they host Bolton and East Windsor at the high school.
