Ellington explosion in the fifth inning enables Knights to pin loss on Canton ‘9’

CANTON, May 12 – The Canton High baseball team had a five-run lead after three innings. But they couldn’t hold the lead.

In contention for its first NCCC championship since 2012, Ellington scored sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth inning, had six hits and scored eight runs to erase the five-run deficit and pull away to earn an 11-6 NCCC victory Thursday at Bowdoin Field.

Ellington (12-4, 12-2 NCCC) had 12 hits and seven doubles to beat Canton for the 11th time in the last 11 years. Canton (8-6, 7-6 NCCC) dropped their third straight contest.

Canton led 5-0 after three innings thanks to a RBI double from Jake Schaetzel in the third inning along with a RBI single from Sam Beadle and a two-RBI double from Ethan Burke. But Ellington took command with its eight-run fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead, sparked by a two-RBI double from Cameron Rosa and a double from Bailey Bassett.

Rosa, Skorulski and Basset had three doubles each for the winning Purple Knights, who lead the NCCC with a 12-2 record. Coventry is second at 10-3 trailed by Suffield (10-4) and SMSA (9-4).

For Canton, Schaetzel and Jack Mansur each had doubles while Ethan Burke (2-for-3) had a double and a triple. Mansur, Trey Van deBogart, Schaetzel, Burke and Nate Fulham each had two hits for the Warriors.

The Warriors close out a busy week – they are 1-3 thus far – by hosting East Windsor on Saturday at noon at Bowdoin Field.
