Litchfield completes the comeback to beat Canton in regular season finale

Baseball ImageLITCHFIELD, May 19 – A day earlier, the Canton High baseball was facing a one-run deficit at Bowdoin Field against Somers. The Warriors ripped off six runs in the sixth inning to take command in an 8-3 win over the Spartans.

On Thursday, Canton was facing another one-run deficit in the regular season finale against Litchfield at Community Field. The Warriors rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but Ryan O’Bernier’s one-out single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Litchfield to a 5-4 victory over Canton.

Canton finishes the regular season with an 11-9 record and 9-7 in the NCCC. The Warriors were 6-3 in one-run games this spring.

The Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Ethan Burke’s home run to center field. But Litchfield (4-13) responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sparked by a two-out double from Nick Andro.

In the seventh inning, Canton’s Brandon Peters led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jack Mansur’s RBI double to cut the Litchfield lead to one run, 4-3. Later in the inning, Mansur scored on a one-out sacrifice fly from Sam Beadle to tie the score at 4-4.

Mansur was 3-for-4 with a RBI double. Burke was 2-for-4 while Peters was 2-for-3. On the mound, Canton’s Nathan Fulham went six innings, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking four. Canton reliever Jake Schaetzel (4-5) picked up the loss in relief.

Against Somers (7-11, 6-10 NCCC) on Wednesday, Canton turned it around in the sixth inning with six runs to take command of the contest. The Warriors trailed the entire game before they took the lead in the sixth inning.

James Mattson and Burke led off the inning with singles and Mattson tied the game a 3-3, scoring on a RBI single from Fulham. A two-out walk to Trey Van deBogart forced in a run to give Canton its first lead, 4-3.

Schaetzel followed with a two RBI double to left field for a 6-3 advantage and Sam Beadle ripped a two-RBI double to left field to allow the lead to swell to 8-3.

Jack Mansur and Beadle were each 2-for-3 in the game with Beadle getting a double and two RBI. Mattson and Burke were 2-for-4 at the plate while Schaetzel was 1-for-4 with a double and four RBI.

On the mound, Schaetzel (4-4) earned his fourth win of the season with two innings of shutout relief. He struck out three and scattered three hits in two innings.
