COVENTRY, May 16 – Both teams had multiple chances to win Monday’s NCCC baseball game. It was the Coventry High baseball team that came through with the winning hit in a 5-4 decision over Canton.
The host Patriots had seven hits and walked six times. They stranded 11 runners. But they got the key hit in the fifth inning to go ahead of Canton for good. Coventry loaded the bases on a single, a hit batter and an infield single. They took the lead on an error and a fielder’s choice.
Canton (9-8, 8-7 NCCC) had 11 hits in the game with Trey Van deBogart, James Mattson and Jake Schaetzel each going 2-for-4. The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI double from Sam Beadle. After the Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, Schaetzel’s RBI single in the third inning to left field gave Canton a 3-2 advantage.
Coventry (11-4, 11-4 NCCC) took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Warriors came back to tie the game at 4-4 on Mattson’s RBI single. Schenk went the distance for Coventry, scattering 11 hits and striking out six. Canton, which stranded nine runners, slips to 6-3 this season in one-run contests.
