AVON, June 24 – The Avon American Legion baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and reliever Connor Harris threw two innings of shutout baseball to lead Post 201 to a 4-1 Zone 1 victory over Wolcott at Buckingham Field Friday night.

The victory ends a busy stretch for Avon, which played on four consecutive nights and had six games in six days. Post 201 captured four of the six games, including the last three in a row to improve to 9-2 in Zone 1.

Avon solidified their hold on first place in the zone. Bristol is in second place with a 6-2 record followed by Wolcott (7-4) and Simsbury (8-5). And Avon gets a few days to rest before they return to the diamond next Tuesday when they host Bristol at Buckingham Field at 5:45 p.m.

Avon led 1-0 after four innings. Sean Del Gallo was hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on Jeremy Zarwanski’s RBI single to left field to give Avon a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

In the top of the fifth, Wolcott tied the game off Harris. Wolcott loaded the bases with singles from Steve Urbanski and Matt Warren and a walk to Vincent Gambino. Wolcott tied the game, 1-1, on a sacrifice fly from Robert Perazzella.

Avon’s defense prevented Wolcott from taking the lead. Michael Guglotti grounded to second baseman Will Thramann, who fired the ball home to Zarwanski, who tagged out Gambino at home plate, trying to score from third base. The next batter grounded out to third baseman Brady Williamson to end the inning.

Avon took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Olson singled to left field and moved to third base on Zarwanski’s single to right field. Olson scored on a balk to give Avon a 2-1 lead. Zarwanski scored from second base on a RBI single from Andrew LeDuc to extend the lead to 3-1.

LeDuc stole second base and moved to third on an error. He scored on a second Wolcott error in the inning to give Avon a 4-1 lead.

Zarwanski led Avon at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. LeDuc had a single and one RBI.

Harris improved to 4-0 on the season with a strong outing. He scattered four hits and two walks in three innings of work in relief of Olson, the starting pitcher.

With the win, Avon wins the season series with Wolcott. Post 201 took two of three games so Avon will hold the tiebreaker edge should the two teams finish tied at the end of the season.
