TORRINGTON, June 23 – The Avon American Legion baseball got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 13-7 win over Torrington in a Zone 1 contest at Fuessenich Park.

A day after Avon had 12 hits and seven stolen bases in a seven-run victory over Torrington, Post 201 got 14 hits on Thursday night along with another five stolen bases. Avon led 7-2 after just two innings.

It was the third straight night that Post 201 played and coupled with a doubleheader against Wolcott on Sunday, it has been five games in five days. Avon has gone 3-2 in that stretch and improved to 8-2 in Zone 1.

Coupled with a one-run loss by Wolcott to Terryville, Avon moves back into first place in Zone 1 followed by Bristol (6-2) and Wolcott (7-3). Avon hosts Wolcott on Friday night at Buckingham Field at 5:45 p.m.

On Thursday night, Sean Del Gallo got Avon started immediately. He was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second base. He stole five bases in the two games against the P-38s. Teammate Justin Olson walked and both scored on Jeremy Zarwanski’s two-RBI single to right field.

Kyle Emery reached on an error, moved to second base on a passed ball. Emery and Zarwanski scored on Brady Williamson’s two-RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Torrington (3-9) cut the lead to two runs, 4-2, in the first inning but Avon responded immediately in the second inning. Del Gallo doubled to left field and scored on Olson’s triple to center field to extend the lead to 5-2. With one out, Olson scored on a RBI single to left field from Andrew LeDuc for a 6-2 lead. LeDuc eventually scored on a passed ball.

Olson led Avon at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. LeDuc was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Del Gallo was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two stolen bases. Zarwanski was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI. Avon’s 14 hits was their second-best hitting performance of the season. They had 15 in a win over Wolcott on Sunday.

Williamson pitched four innings, allowed 10 hits and picked up his first win of the season on the mound. For Torrington, Clay Langer was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. It was Avon’s ninth straight win over the P-38s dating back to the 2013 campaign.
