Avon boys, girls move closer to CCC divisional titles; Canton girls now 7-1

AVON – The Avon High boys and girls cross country teams moved within one victory of securing their second straight CCC Central White divisional championship with victories over Northwest Catholic on Tuesday at Fisher Meadows.

Zach Bortoff led the Avon boys to a 22-36 win over the Lions, running the 3.1 mile course in 17:05. Avon is now 3-0 in dual meets and 3-0 in the CCC Central White.

Behind Rachel Martin’s winning time of 19:12, the Avon High girls improved to 3-0 overall and in the CCC Central White with a 19-44 victory over Northwest Catholic. The Avon girls, who moved up to No. 6 in the most recent state coaches poll, can win another division title by beating Farmington on Thursday, Oct. 13 at Fisher Meadows.

The Avon boys will also face Farmington in the dual meet finale for both teams.

Canton girls improve to 7-1
BOLTON, Oct. 5 – Led by Emily Briggs’ winning time of 20:51, the Canton High girls cross country team had five of the top six finishers to earn a pair of wins over Granby, 24-31 and Bolton, 16-41 and improve to 7-1 on the season Wednesday at Bolton High School.

Abby Briggs finished third for Canton and was followed by Belle Magna, Cameron McCauley and Helena Winkler to lead the Warriors. Kennedy Baggott led Granby (6-2) with a strong second place finish in 21:12.

In the boys race, Canton’s Max Sparks won his third consecutive NCCC dual meet with a 19-second win over Bolton’s Chris Cassello with a winning time of 16:53 over 3.1 miles. But it wasn’t enough as the Warriors (5-4) fell to Bolton, 24-31 and Granby, 20-42.

Bolton (6-2) swept the meet by placing four runners among the top five. Granby (5-3) had five runners in the top 10 led by Blake Windham, who was fourth with a time of 18:21.
