SIMSBURY, Nov. 10 – Canton’s Peter Myers signed a national letter of intent on Thursday to play baseball with the University of Hartford in the spring of 2018. Myers signed at the Master’s School in Simsbury where he attends.
Myers, a 6-foot-1 lefthander, has played with Master’s for the last three seasons. He also been a mainstay on the pitching staff for the Simsbury American Legion baseball team, helping Post 84 to three consecutive state tournament berths and a two Zone 1 championships.
Myers talked about playing sports as a youngster with his older brother, Nick. When Nick played baseball, Pete had to follow. So Pete and his father, Kurt, went down to Mills Pond Park to throw the baseball.
“Throwing with my Dad, we noticed that I could throw,” he said. “We found that it didn’t matter how big I was. I was on the mound 60 feet away (from the batter) and I knew they wouldn’t be able to hit the ball.”
Myers played in Little League in Canton and played on a Canton/Granby Junior Division Little League team that went to the state finals in 2013.
At the Master’s School, he has thrown two no-hitters in his career and has a career record of 15-2 with a 1.50 ERA. He helped Master’s win the Hudson Valley Athletic League title this past spring and was on the mound as Master’s earned its first-ever NEPSAC playoff win over Stamford’s King Low Heywood School in May.
With the Simsbury American Legion baseball team, he has played three seasons, pitched over 100 innings, struck out 115 batters and is 11-5 with a 2.00 ERA. This past summer, he struck out 13 batters in six innings in a win over Torrington and fanned 10 in another six inning performance against Wolcott.
He’ll attend the University of Hartford next fall and hopes to be in the starting rotation in the spring of 2018. Myers was also recruited by Quinnipiac, Long Island University in Brooklyn, the University of Rhode Island and UConn.
Myers thanked Hartford. “They’re giving me the opportunity to do what I love,” he said. The Hawks set a new school record for most wins last spring with a 37-18 record before being eliminated by Stony Brook in the semifinal of the America East tournament. He will become part of a select group of Canton athletes to compete in collegiate athletics at the NCAA Division I level.
