COVENTRY, Jan. 11  – The Canton High girls basketball team has had little trouble the past three games over the past six days. The Warriors had few problems in winning their fifth straight game Wednesday night with a 55-27 decision over Coventry in North Central Connecticut Conference play.

On Monday night, senior All-State forward Emily Briggs had nine of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter as Canton won their fourth consecutive game with a 55-40 win over host Somers.

Last Friday, Canton (7-2, 5-2 NCCC) closed out the second Canton Holiday Classic with a 41-29 win over Tolland in the consolation game that was originally postponed by snow.

Briggs had 20 points while Abbe Skinner had 10 as Canton moved out to a 32-14 lead at halftime over the struggling Patriots (1-9).

Against Somers, the Warriors raced out to an early 10-point lead, 12-2 before the Spartans cut the lead to four at 14-10. But Abbe Skinner drained a three-point shot and the Warriors outscored Somers, 13-4 in the final 5:22 of the second quarter to take command of the contest.

Skinner scored 10 points for Canton while Abby Charron added nine points.

Against Tolland, Briggs had 27 points for Canton to lead the Warriors. The visiting Eagles didn’t score more than nine points in a single quarter and had no one score at least 10 points. Sam Matteo led Tolland (5-4) with nine points. The game was postponed due to snow that prevented Tolland from getting to Canton for the contest on December 29.

Hall beat Suffield in the tournament championship game, 54-40. Briggs and Matteo were named to the All-Tournament team along with Suffield’s McKenzie Rusczyk and Hall’s Lexi Gellerman and Amber Raisner. The MVP of the tournament was Raisner.
