Emery wins two events as Avon swimmers beat Farmington to remain undefeated

NEW BRITAIN, Jan. 6 – Avon High’s Kyle Emery won two events while the Falcons boys swimming team won seven of 12 events to beat Farmington, 95-83, in a Central Connecticut Conference meet Friday night at Central Connecticut State University.

Emery won the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke for the Falcons, who improve to 3-0 on the season. Emergy also swam on two winning relay teams. Avon’s depth helped carry the day. The Falcons swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle and had two of the top three finishers in five other individual events.

Avon’s Brendan Downey (diving), Adam Zapatka (500 free) and Maksymilian Jaremko (100 fly) each won individual events. Sam Johnson would have won the 100 breast stroke but he swam it as an exhibition to avoid running up the team score.

Emery, Johnson, Justin Arroyo and Andre Richard swam on the winning 200 medley relay team while Jaremko, Arroyo, Richard and Jared Culbertson swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Avon’s 400 freestyle relay team of Jaremko, Zapatka, Arroyo, Emery swam the final event as an exhibition but also posted the fastest time in the event.

Avon (3-0, 0-0 CCC North White) opened the season with a 96-90 win over Holy Cross and beat East Catholic, 92-78, for the second win of the season earlier this week. The Falcons return to the pool on Tuesday night when they host Southington at 7 p.m. at Central Connecticut State.

Avon competes in the CCC North’s White Division with Rocky Hill, E.O. Smith/Tolland, Newington, Wethersfield and Hartford Public. The Falcons are looking to build upon a successful debut in the CCC last winter. Avon went 11-4 and 4-1 in the CCC North White last year while winning the CCC North White championship meet.
