Few bad innings lead to back-to-back losses for Avon to finish regular season

SOUTHINGTON, May 23 – A few bad innings led to a pair of losses to conclude the regular season for the Avon High baseball team.

On Monday evening, Avon scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a one-run lead but Farmington scored one in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings and beat the Falcons with one-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, 7-6.

On Tuesday night, CCC Central Blue Division champion Southington scored five runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 6-0 decision over Avon at John Fontanta Field

Avon finished the season at 13-7 overall and 5-5 in the CCC Central White Division. Now, the Falcons await the pairings for the CIAC Class L tournament which begins next week. A year ago, Avon advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 1968 – a run they hope to repeat again.

Against Farmington under the lights at Tunxis Meade Park, Avon took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 5-2, Avon loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single from Adam Theriault.

Avon’s Kyle Emery struck out for the first out of the inning but reliever Troy Dunham walked in a run. Will Boone had a RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4. After a second strikeout by Justin Olson, Brandon Dyer coaxed a walk to force in a run and Ryan Ollestard scored on an error for a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Farmington’s Pat Arnold led off with a double. After a strikeout, Jimmy Siuta reached on an error and Arnold moved to third base. Arnold scored on Jake Rappaport’s sacrifice fly to tie the game.

In the ninth, Farmington’s Brooks Milhalek led off the inning with a double. Olson relived Boone on the mound and walked Arnold and Jake Dunst to load the bases. Olson struck out Siuta but Rappaport’s RBI single to right field won the game for Farmington (5-13).

Rappaport and Mihalek each had two hits and two RBI for the Indians. Dunham picked up the win in relief, pitching 4 2/3rd innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

For Avon, Dyer was 3-for-5 with one RBI. Kyle Zarwanski had a triple and one RBI for the Falcons, who committed five errors but gave up just one unearned run.

Against Southington, seven individual players had hits for the Blue Knights, who shutout Avon for the second time this season. Southington blanked Avon, 9-0 on April 28.

A RBI single from Jake Babon Jake and back-to-back doubles from Matthew Sciota and Jonathan Mikosz in the fourth inning gave the Knights (14-5) a 3-0 lead. A two-run home run from Tyler Cyr helped the Southington lead swell to 5-0.

Jeremy Zarwanski and Adam Theriault were each 2-for-3 for the Falcons. Zarwanski had a double and a single. On the mound, Olson (4-2) took the loss pitching 4 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six.
