SOMERS, Feb. 2 – After clinching the NCCC championship earlier this week, the Canton High girls basketball team didn’t sit on their laurels. They raced out to an early lead to beat Somers, 60-34, Friday and remained undefeated in the NCCC.

Canton (15-3, 15-0) is one win away from going undefeated in the league for the first time since 1998. The Warriors play at East Granby on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m. Three of the last four NCCC champions – Suffield in 2017, Enfield in 2016 and Avon in 2014 — each went 16-0 in the regular season.

Abby Charron led the Warriors with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists while Belle Magna had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan Walzak had nine points thanks to three 3-point field goals. The Warriors had a season-high eight 3-point shots.

“Going into the contest, we knew we were in for a battle as Somers was tied for 2nd place in the NCCC,” Canton coach Brian Medeiros said. “The girls came out and played with great energy from the start and never looked back.  Behind our full court pressure we were able to jump out to 18-7 lead after one period.

“We had some great balance in the first half as Abby Charron and  Belle Magna (each) scored 10 points, respectively. Paige Brown and Lauren Puglielli chipped in with 5 and 4 points,” he said.

“It was a great team win against a very solid Somers team. We did a very good job of making them feel uncomfortable for large portions of the game on the defensive end,” Medeiros said. “I was really happy with our offensive production. We shot it well tonight and it was a nice bounce back from the Granby game.”

Canton returns to action on Wednesday at East Granby and concludes the regular season with a big test at No. 11 Farmington (15-2) on Monday, February 12.
