NEW HAVEN, Feb. 17 – Canton freshman Julia Caputo had a season-best time of 11:23.38 in the 3,200 meters to finish sixth at the State Open indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse High.

It’s the best-ever finish for a Canton girl at the State Open indoor meet. The sixth place finish earned the first point for the Warriors at the State Open.

Caputo had the highest finish among four Canton athletes at the State Open.

Max Sparks had a season-best time of 4:38.71 to finish seventh in the 1,600 meters. He sliced nearly three seconds off his previous best time this winter of 4:31.39 set earlier this month winning the Class S championship. It’s the best finish for the Warriors at the Open since Keith Wilson and the 4×400 relay each finished fifth four years ago in 2014.

Peter Fuller took ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-10 while Chelsea Mitchell was 15th in the long jump (15-11) and 16th in the 55 meters dash (7.78).

The Avon High girls indoor track and field team also had a pair of top 10 finishers at the State Open.

Carly Carpino finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10¼ inches. Rhiannon Richmond shaved off nearly three seconds off the school record in the 1,600 meters. Richmond was ninth in the 1,600 meters with a record time of 5:22.83.

Teammate Hayley Douglea was 15th in the high jump with a leap of 4-foot-10.
