Two Canton swimmers training with Avon and competing this winter

CANTON, Feb. 24 – Two Canton High girls are training and competing this winter with the Avon High boys swimming team.

Avon has a large co-ed team with more than 20 girls on the squad. The Avon High girls recently won the Splash Classic, the unofficial state championship meet for girls that compete during the boys swimming team, for the 12th year in a row.

Canton’s Gracey Boman and Margaret Babbit swim unofficially during Avon High meets. They swam representing the Warriors at the recent Splash Classic in Simsbury.

Boman took third in the 100 yard breast stroke with a season-best time of 1:13.48 and was sixth in the 100 yard butterfly with a season-best time of 1:04.78. Babbit was 19th in the 50 free with a time of 29.77 and 23rd in the 100 free with a time of 1:07.98. Canton finished 13th out of 16 teams in the meet.

Boman qualified to swim at the upcoming CIAC Class S qualifying meet in the 100 butterfly and 100 breast stroke on Saturday in Plainville. Girls can participate but they must meet boys qualifying times.

At the recent CIAC Class S girls swimming championship meet in the fall, Boman would have finished eighth with her Splash Classic time of 1:13.48 in the 100 breast stroke and sixth with her time of 1:04.78 in the 100 butterfly.

Boman and Babbit are not Canton’s first scholastic swimmers.

Conor, Tucker and Hunter Boman swam and trained with Granby in 2011 and 2012. Conor Boman finished seventh in Class S in the 100 butterfy in 2012 while Tucker Bowman was ninth in the 200 free and 500 free that same year.
