SIMSBURY, May 4 – An RBI triple from Jack Donofrio and a RBI single from Jordan Valentino in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Simsbury High baseball team to a 5-3 win over Avon on Friday night at Memorial Field.
It was the fourth straight win for Simsbury (8-4) this week and the seventh victory in the last eight game for the Trojans. After starting the season with a 1-6 record, Avon (3-8) went 2-2 in four contests this week as well.
Will Boone led the Falcons, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Ryan Ollestad (2-4, two RBI) and Zack Aiello (2-3) each had two hits for Avon.
For Simsbury, Peter Phillips (2-3, one RBI), Luke Benneche (2-3) and Valentino (2-3) each had two hits. John McNally pitched three innings in relief, striking out three, scattering four hits and picking up the victory.
Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Ollestad’s RBI single. The Falcons made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Kyle Zarwanski walked with two outs, stole second base and scored on Connor Gallagher’s single to left field.
Simsbury took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Phillips and Valentino and a ground ball out. Avon tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning after Boone singled with two outs, stole second base and scored on Ollestad’s single to right field.
Boone got the start for Avon on the mound and struck out three in four innings of work. Coppen pitched the final two innings, allowed five hits and struck out two. He took the loss on the mound.
Avon returns to action on Monday when they host Hall at Buckingham Field. Simsbury travels to Southington on Monday to face the Blue Knights at Fontana Field.
