Avon, Canton baseball teams can’t hold leads in close defeats

Avon’s Miles Borenstein was 3-for-4 with five RBI in Tuesday’s CCC West loss to Conard.

WEST HARTFORD, April 16 – Trailing by three runs, the Conard High baseball team scored five unanswered runs to hand Avon their fifth straight loss with a 9-7 decision in Central Connecticut Conference West Division action.

Conard (3-2) trailed by three, 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Chieftains had a player steal home and Emmett Coco blasted a two-run double to tie the ballgame. John Brennan’s RBI double gave Conard the lead for good, 8-7. The Chieftains added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Conard pitching gave up just one hit in the final three innings.

Avon (0-5) had three leads in the game along with a season-high nine hits. Miles Borenstein was 3-for-4 with five RBI with a double and triple. Jake Coppen was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Avon took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Borenstein ripped a two-run double to centerfield and Daniel Bae had a RBI single. Conard took a 4-3 lead in the first inning thanks to four walks and two errors by the Falcons.

In the second inning, Avon moved ahead again, 5-4, on a two-run triple to right field from Borenstein. The Falcons extended the lead to three runs, 7-4, in the fourth inning on Borenstein’s two-run single to left field.

Brenndan was 3-for-4 for Conard with two RBI and a pair of doubles. Teammate Ryan Farley had a pair of triples.

Avon returns to action on Wednesday when they host Northwest Catholic at Buckingham Field.

Suffield 5, Canton 3
CANTON, April 16 – The Canton High baseball team rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game but visiting Suffield scored twice in the sixth inning to earn a 5-3 win in North Central Connecticut action Tuesday at Bowdoin Field.

Richard Ferrari’s RBI single put the Wildcats ahead in the sixth inning and a second run scored on an error to give Suffield (4-3, 3-2 NCCC) a two-run advantage.

Canton (2-3, 2-3 NCCC) scored three times in the fifth inning. Drew Ferrone scored on a passed ball for Canton’s first run of the game while Jack Rose added a two-run triple to tie the game at 3-3.

Rose led Canton with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI. Ferrone had a double in the game, too.

Canton returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ellington for a 4 p.m. start. Canton hosts Thomaston in a non-league contest on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Bowdoin Field.
