Extra base hits and stolen bases lift Canton to first win of season

VERNON, April 8 – Jack Rose and Matt Rose hit back-to-back RBI triples in the top of the seventh inning as the Canton High baseball team scored three runs to snap a 4-4 tie and earn a 7-5 victory in North Central Connecticut Conference play Monday afternoon.

Rockville (2-2, 1-2 NCCC) scored two runs in the sixth inning on three walks, an error and a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4. But the Warriors (1-1, 1-1 NCCC) rallied in the seventh inning for their first victory of the season.

James Mattson walked and scored on Jack Rose’s RBI triple to center field for a 5-4 lead. Jack Rose scored on a RBI triple from Matt Rose to increase the Canton lead to two runs, 6-4. Drew Ferrone’s one-out RBI single to left field drove in Matt Rose with the third run of the inning.

Canton relief pitcher Devin Brown gave up two hits but struck out two to earn the victory in the seventh inning.

The Warriors stole home three times in the game – twice by Mattson, who stole three bases. Mattson and Nate Lincoln each stole home in the third inning as Canton took a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, Michael Sullivan led off for Canton with a single and stole second base. One pitch later, he stole third base. Two pitches later, Mattson was on base with a walk.

With a double steal, Sullivan stole home for the second time as Mattson stole second base. Mattson scored on a Jack Rose’s RBI single to give Canton a 4-2 lead.

Jack Rose was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a triple while his brother Matt Rose was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a triple. Ferrone was 2-for-4 with a RBI while Lincoln was 2-for-5 with a double. The Warriors stole five bases in the game.

Chris Mierez was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI for Rockville. Four of Rockville’s five hits were for extra bases.

On the mound for the Warriors, Lincoln had four strikeouts and three hits in five innings of work. But he walked seven and reliever Ryan Scarfuri walked three.

Canton returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Windsor Locks for a NCCC contest beginning at 3:45 p.m.
