Luke Coppen (2) puts up a shot in Thursday night’s CCC West contest in Avon. Conard beat the Falcons, 61-42.
AVON, January 26, 2023 – The Avon High boys basketball team was in position to earn their third win of the season Thursday night before visiting Conard began to assert themselves.
The visiting Red Wolves rebounded with a passion to pull away from the Falcons with a 61-42 victory in Central Connecticut Conference West action.
Avon’s Isaac Aguilar led all scorers with a game-high 24 points while Riley Fox had 20 points for Conard with Jackson Morhardt adding 13 for the Red Wolves, now 9-3.
Avon (2-11) led 31-28 with 4:58 left in the third quarter after Luke Coppen’s fadeaway jumper. But Conard scored nine unanswered points to take a 37-31 lead thanks to a nice drive by Fox to the basket and a free throw, a basket down low from Morhardt and a three-point shot from Jaydon Schuler.
A jumper from the corner from Harrison Srb and a layup from Parker Jobe in the final minute of the third period cut the Conard lead to two, 37-35.
But Conard outscored the Falcons 24-7 in the fourth quarter, limiting Avon to one field goal and five free throws. The Red Wolves gave up few second chance opportunities for the Falcons, controlling the glass by a solid rebounding effort.
Avon returns to action on Saturday when they visit Rockville High in Vernon for a 1 p.m. start.
