Of note: Stafford won their first state championship since 1953 when they beat Suffield, 52-47. This was the Bulldogs first title game appearance since that victory. Colin Tozier led the way with 31 points, including five shots from three-point range. Gudeman had a game-high 19 rebounds for Stafford, who finished third in the NCCC behind Coventry and Granby. Stafford beat NCCC champion Coventry in the semifinals, 66-65, to earn their berth in the final. Booth had 11 rebounds and a team-leading seven assists for Hartford Public, in the final for the first time since 2008 and seeking their first title since 1994.

Danielle Wheeler had a game-high 23 points, including six shots from three-point range while Reese Jeamel had 14 points and two rebounds. Hailey Mayo, a hitter on the Coventry girls volleyball team that won a Class S title in November, had nine points, three assists and a game-high 19 rebounds. NVL champion Seymour was led by Mia Cunningham with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Of note: A month ago on Feb. 19, Morgan beat Stonington by 23 points and the Huskies came into the state final on an 18-game winning streak. But the Bears outscored Morgan by 11 points in the third quarter to earn a stunning 56-47 win in the Division IV title game. Junior Sophia Hoinsky had 16 points for Stonington along with 12 rebounds and four assists. Teammate Addison Cadmus had 16 points, nine rebounds and a team-leading five assists. Stonington won their first title since 2006. Morgan, who lost in the finals a year ago, last won a championship in 2000. Morgan had won their three previous tournament games by an average of 32 points while Stonington had won their four tournament games by an average of 30 points.

Sirabionian had 12 rebounds, a team-high six assists and three steals for the winning Westies. For Staples, Tobias had nine rebounds and six assists. West Haven had a five-point lead in the 2nd OT with 1:33 left but Staples rallied to tie. It was tied at 72 in the third OT with 1:11 remaining but Roman scored with 57 seconds left and Morris had a block to stop a Staples drive. West Haven had a 7-0 run in the final 58 seconds to close out the game while Staples missed their final four shots from the floor. It was West Haven’s first title since 1987.

Dunnack had 20 points and 19 rebounds for Windham Tech while March had eight assists and five steals.

Of note: Two Greenwich sophomore made big plays in the final minute to help the Cardinal win their first state championship in girls basketball. Elsa Xhekaj made a steal with 26 seconds left after the Cardinals had taken a two-point lead to keep possession of the ball. Leading by three, sophomore Zari Faison blocked Abby Casper with six seconds left to help the Cardinals prevail. Faison had a game-high 14 rebounds and four steals while Zhekaj had two steals and four rebounds. Greenwich led by 10 at the half only to see NWC open the third quarter with a 13-2 run.
