WINSTED, Jan. 25 – The Canton High girls basketball team is beginning to see the results from their hard work. The Warriors won two of three games this week to improve to 4-9 on the season and 3-8 in the NCCC with victories over Gilbert, 46-9 and Enfield, 54-32.
In between the two victories was a three-point loss to Granby, 35-32 as the Bears held Canton to just four points in the fourth quarter while they scored 11 to earn their 10th win of the season.
“Our defense has been outstanding,” Canton High coach Michael Jessie said. “Junior Erin Detorie and Jacquie Grabowski have done a good job at the top of our press. They have also begin to guard some of the best players in the conference.”
On Friday against Gilbert, the Warriors held the young Yellowjackets without a field goal in the first half as they opened up a 29-1 lead. Senior Amanda Curvino had a game-high 18 points while point guard Kat Winsor had six assists, no turnovers and four points. Freshman Maggie Treacy had five points while freshmen Amanda Gottlieb and Elyse Wallen scored their first varsity points. Both had four points.
Against Granby, Curvino had 15 points for the Warriors while Treacy added six.
Canton won their third game of the season on Tuesday with a 54-32 decision over Enfield. It was Canton’s second-highest scoring output of the season with Gabby Rose leading the way with 17 points. Grabowski chipped in with 11 points while Curvino scored 12.
After opening the season with an 0-6 record, the Warriors have won four of their last seven games. Canton needs four more victories in its final seven games to earn a berth in the CIAC Class S tournament. The final five games of the season are at home.
