The snow left behind by the Blizzard of 2013 continues to wreak havoc on the high school sports scene. The blizzard that left up to 30 inches of snow across the state has taxed many towns and cities trying to clear roads, making it safe to bring students to school.
The Avon High boys basketball team (13-3, 10-1 NCCC) has a challenging week with three tough games beginning with a game on Tuesday night at home against three-time defending NCCC champion Enfield (13-2, 10-2 NCCC) at 7 p.m. That is followed with a game at Granby (14-1, 11-0 NCCC) on Wednesday night. The Falcons also play at Bolton on Friday.
The Avon High girls basketball team (16-2, 14-1 NCCC) plays at Enfield on Tuesday and hosts Granby in a tough game on Wednesday night. The eight-team NCCC playoffs begin on Saturday, Feb. 16 with two games at Avon. The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19 with the championship game on Thursday, Feb. 21.
Avon and Canton’s wrestling team lost its opportunity to wrestle in the NCCC championship tournament due to the snow. But Avon was crowned as league champions due to their 7-0 dual meet record in the league.
The Avon High girls indoor track and field team hopes to shake off several days of inactivity with a strong performance at the Class L championship meet on Friday night (Feb. 15) beginning at 4 p.m. at the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse in New Haven. School was dismissed early last Friday due to the blizzard, canceling practice and there was no school on Monday, which eliminated any practice.
Canton’s boys indoor track and field team will compete in the Class S track and field championships on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. at Hillhouse. The State Open has been moved to Tuesday, February 19.
The Canton High boys basketball team (5-10, 3-9 NCCC) has to win three of its final five games to earn a spot in the Class S tournament. The Warriors travel to Windsor Locks on Tuesday and host Ellington on Friday. They also have games with East Granby and Shepaug to reschedule.
The Canton High girls basketball team (7-10, 6-9 NCCC) needs to win one of its final three games against Northwestern, Windsor Locks and East Granby to earn a spot in the Class S tournament. Canton hosts Windsor Locks Tuesday and Northwestern on Thursday.

We updated new dates for the indoor track and field championships, which kept getting moved to the blizzard and its aftermath. Canton is at Class S meet Thursday with Avon at Class L meet on Friday, Feb. 15.
