WATERVILLE, Maine — Connecticut College junior All-American Mike LeDuc of Canton won the New England Division III championship in the 5,000 meters on Saturday for the second straight year.
LeDuc shattered the facility record at Colby College with a time of 14:30.03, breaking a record that had stood for more than two decades. He broke the record held by Trent Murrell of Augustana College set in 1992 (14:36.78).
LeDuc’s performance is the 11th best time this season among NCAA Division III athletes in the 5,000.
Gauthier plays well at St. Anselm
GOFFSTOWN, N.H. – Junior outfielder Monique Gauthier of Canton had a strong season with the St. Anselm’s softball team, hitting .306 with five doubles and three home runs. Gauthier was named to the All-Northeast 10 Conference third team as an outfielder. Gauthier was second on the team with 37 hits, had 18 RBI and five stolen bases. St. Anselm went 22-21 on the year and 17-12 in the league.
Liucci leads St. Francis at NEC Tournament
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Nikki Liucci, a freshman at St. Francis (N.Y.), set a new school record for the lowest score in a round in the third and final round of the recent Northeast Conference women’s golf tournament in Daytona Beach.
Liucci, a two-time All-State golfer from Canton, shot a 79 in the third and final round of the tournament. She shot a 264 in the tournament with an 89 in the first round and a 96 in the second round. Liucci finished tied for 45th and was the first woman from St. Francis (N.Y.) in the field.
St. Francis (N.Y.) finished 11th in the field of 11 teams in the NEC Tournament. St. Francis’ third round score of 341 was the lowest round shot by the team all season.
The tournament was won by Long Island University. Fairleigh Dickinson’s Mariana Juaristi won the individual title with a 3-over 219.
Furtney, Drago run well for Bentley
DURHAM, N.H. – The Bentley College men’s track and field team finished fourth out of seven at the recent Wildcat Invitational at the University of New Hampshire.
Canton sophomore Ned Furtney was sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:43.94 while Avon senior John Drago ran a personal-best in the 1,500 meters, finishing the race in 4:02.39. Drago knocked seven seconds off his previous best time.
Top 15 performance for Vanriel
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Former Avon High track and field runner Titi VanRiel finished 13th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.93 at the recent Northeast 10 Conference championship meet. VanRiel helped Southern Connecticut State University finish fourth at the meet. Massachusetts-Lowell won with the event with 189 points ahead of the University of New Haven with 115.
Cahill helps Saint Rose at NE-10 meet
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Jon Cahill of Canton helped The College of Saint Rose finish seventh at the Northeast 10 Conference track and field championship meet.
Cahill earned points for Saint Rose by taking seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.44. He was also part of 4×400 meter relay team that finished eighth in 3:29.11. Cahill ran with teammates Nathan Bub, freshman Alex Triana and junior Tim Scudds. Cahill also ran on a 4×800 relay team that took fifth in 7:51.51 with Triana, Macky Lloyd and sophomore Eamonn Coughlin.
Southern Connecticut State won the men’s title with 228 points with Massachusetts-Lowell in second place with 167 points. Saint Rose is from Albany, N.Y.
