STAFFORD, May 7 – In a showdown between three of the top girls track and field teams in the NCCC, Avon remained undefeated with a narrow six-point win over Granby, 74½ to 68½ and a victory over host Stafford, 109-43.
Avon and Granby both came into the meet undefeated while Stafford had just one loss. Avon (11-0, 11-0 NCCC) won five individual events and all three relay races to secure its 16th straight dual meet win and 15th consecutive NCCC victory. Granby (11-1, 10-1 NCCC) suffered its first loss of the season despite victories in five individual events and a pair of wins from freshman Cassandra Miller in the 200 meters and 300 hurdles.
To determine a league champion, teams earn one point for each NCCC team they beat in the dual meet portion of the schedule and one point for each team they beat at the NCCC championship meet on Tuesday, May 21 at Coventry High.
The Avon boys improved to 8-3 with a pair of wins over Granby, 82-70 and Stafford, 99-44. Jake Sartain swept the three jumping events – capturing the high jump, triple jump and long jump.
In the girls race, there were close races all over the track. In the 1,600 meters, Avon picked up an additional two points when McHugh beat Granby’s Ashley Piccarillo to win the 1,600 meters by a second or two. In the 800 meters, it was Avon’s Sara Stokesbury beating Piccarillo by less than a second for another two points. Race winners earn five points while the second place finisher earns their team three points.
In the 400 meters, Avon’s Stephanie Koo beat Granby’s Cynthia Jones by a second to earn an additional two points.
McHugh had a busy afternoon winning the 1,600 meters, running on the winning 4×800 and 4×400 relay teams and racing in the 800 meters. Molly Hamel (3,200), Maeve Reiss (triple jump) and Carolyn Rendeiro (high jump) picked up victories for the Falcons. Rendeiro and Erin Sherman finished first and second in the high jump, picking up key points for the Falcons.
In the boys competition., Sartain won three events for the Falcons while Cory DiBacco (400), Colin Ponzani (800) and Justin Alessio (1,600) ran for victories.

Avon (8-3, 8-3 NCCC) used its depth to earn the win with second place finishes in 10 of the 17 events, including two by J.R. Reid in the long jump and 100 meters, just 0.11 off the winning pace set by Granby’s Nicholas Richards in 11.7 seconds.
