CANTON — Six distinguished graduates of Canton High School will be recognized at the school’s annual Wall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner on Friday, Oct. 4. It is part of a busy weekend of student, alumni and community events at Canton High.
The Wall of Fame recognizes graduates for their outstanding contributions in their field of work and/or the community. This year’s class of graduates, the 10th group to be recognized includes Dr. Fred Humphrey, Class of 1944, David Gilchrist (1950), the late John Bahre (1950), Dr. Sally (Giguere) Giglio (1956), Richard Hutchings (1977) and Dr. Ted Moise (1983).
The induction dinner is at 6:30 p.m. in the Canton Middle School cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each. Please contact Lisa Davidson at 860-693-7707 before Friday, Sept. 27, to reserve your tickets.
It’s also a full weekend of athletic events at the high school.
On Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, Canton’s volleyball team will host Suffield beginning at 4 p.m. with the field hockey team hosting Westbrook at 6:30 p.m. Alumni field hockey, boys soccer and girls soccer games will be Saturday, Oct. 5 at the high school before a full afternoon and evening of varsity competition begins.
Canton High’s football team will challenge Class S playoff participant Hyde School of New Haven in a home game at 3 p.m. at the high school. At 6 p.m., the Canton girls soccer team will participate in their annual night soccer game against Ellington. The Canton boys will face Ellington in the second game beginning at 8 p.m.
Humphrey, who served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, was a professor at the University of Connecticut from 1965 to 1991 where he established the Masters and doctoral degree programs in martial and family therapy.
Bahre, who served our nation in the Korean War, lived in Canton his entire life, establishing several businesses – John W. Bahre, Inc., Smokey Bahre’s Cider Mill and John W. Bahre Lumber – along with serving as a community volunteer.
Giglio received a master’s degree and Ph.D in reading and counseling psychology from the University of Massachusetts. She was a family therapist in Springfield, Mass., before serving as the school psychologist at Amherst (Mass.) High for 25 years.
Hutchings has been serving his hometown for over 25 years as a firefighter, an emergency medical technician and the fire chief in Canton. He has been the town fire chief since 2004 but also served in this role in 1996-97 and 1997-2000.
Moise is an engineer with Texas Instruments and holds 41 patents related to electronic devices, designs or techniques to reduce manufacturing costs or decrease power consumption. He is most widely known in his field of electrical engineering for development of the world’s only 130-nanometer (nm) ultra-low power ferroelectric memory (FRAM), a game-changing technology that enables medical, consumer and industrial products to work more efficiently and longer on a single charge.
The Wall of Fame began in 2002 and has recognized 57 other Canton High and Collinsville High graduates, dating back to 1912.
