COVENTRY, Oct. 11 – For the second straight year, the game came down to the final play of the game. A year ago, Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton scored on the last play in regulation to tie the game only to see Canton stop an attempted two-point conversion run to lift the Warriors to a two-point victory.

On Friday night under the lights, the host Patriots again scored on the final play of regulation on a five-yard touchdown run from Vincenzo Marciano. This time, Coventry needed one point to tie the game and force overtime. But a bad snap ruined the extra point attempt and Canton came away with a thrilling 28-27 decision.

As it was in 2012, Canton (3-1) had to rally to take the lead. Trailing by seven early in the fourth quarter, Dan Delos scored on a 44-yard run and Eddie Melton’s extra point tied the game at 21-21.

On its next possession, Canton’s defense stood tall, led by defensive tackle Shane Toland. There was several tackles at the line of scrimmage or behind it. A short punt from the Patriots gave Canton the ball on the Patriots’ 47-yard line.

With about a minute remaining, Canton surprised the Patriots. Wide receiver Sebastian Gumbs took a lateral from Delos and completed a 30-yard touchdown pass down the middle to tight end Jake Wood. Despite some tight coverage on Wood, the pass from Gumbs was on target. Melton’s extra point gave Canton a 28-21 lead. Melton was 4-for-4 with extra points in the game.

Coventry marched 59 yards in less than a minute. Coventry QB Dan Lawrence (8-18-0, 102 yards) worked well with receiver Devan Valdes, moving to the Canton 40-yard-line with 20 seconds remaining. Valdes caught five passes for 70 yards in the game.

On fourth down and 10, Lawrence completed a 35-yard pass to Valdes to the Canton 5 for a first down. Two plays later, Marciano (14-75 rushing) broke three tackles to score the touchdown and pull the Patriots within a point. But on the extra point, the snap from center was high and went off the hands of the holder.

Canton took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter after a 20-yard touchdown run from Cam Daley and Keith Wilson scoring on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Eric Scott. The Patriots (2-3) scored the next three touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead.

It was Daley’s first TD of the season. Delos scored his team-leading fifth TD of the campaign. Terrance Brophy led the Warriors with 88 yards rushing on 15 carries while Delos ran for 68 yards on nine carries.

Defensively, Daley had 15 tackles including 12 solo stops. Toland had 10 tackles and seven individual stops. Delos and Brophy each recovered fumbles.
