BOYS SOCCER
Valley Regional 9, Canton 2
DEEP RIVER, Nov. 7 – The game didn’t start too smoothly for the Canton High boys soccer team and it went downhill pretty quickly. No. 19 Canton gave up two goals in the first 12 minutes in a 9-2 loss to No. 3 Valley Regional (15-3-1) under the lights Thursday evening in a second round Class S contest.
Jack Simoneau had three goals and two assists for Valley while Luke Gagnon had two goals. Colin Madigan and Jake Dupre scored goals for Canton. Goalie Josh Frigo made 12 saves for Canton (8-10).
Valley Regional, playing in its first tournament game, outshot Canton, 36-9. Valley has eliminated Canton from the Class S tournament in three of the last five years. Valley beat Canton, 7-3 in 2010 and 2-1 in 2009.
It’s the most goals ever given up by Canton in a CIAC tournament game, eclipsing the eight goals given up in a loss to eventual state champion East Granby in 1970.

GIRLS SOCCER
Guilford 3, Avon 1

Nikki Basilicato, Julie Carr and Andrew Basilicato each scored for Guilford, which is looking to return to the state finals for the first time since 2002.
