Grillo earns 4th appearance at New England tourney; Dahlem falls in Open semis

CP canterbury aAvon senior Marissa Grillo has qualified to play in the New England high school golf championship on Monday, June 23, at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H., for the fourth consecutive year.

Last year, Grillo finished in a four-way tie for the New England individual championship with a 75. But she finished fourth after a playoff. Colette Schmidt of Lebanon, N.H. won the New England title with Berlin’s Julia Kemmling and Nicole Scola of the Prout School in Rhode Island finished tied for second. 

In 2012, Grillo finished tied for eighth place with a 77. In 2011, she finished tied for ninth as a freshman with a 79.

Grillo finished tied for fourth (80) at last week’s CIAC championship tournament, helping Avon to its best-ever team finish (fourth place).

GIRLS TENNIS: Avon senior Hannah Dahlem earned All-State honors for the second time in her high school career by advancing to the semifinals of the State Open tournament.

Dahlem lost to eventual State Open champion Kateri Martin of Darien in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-5. Dahlem had played well with four straight wins. She lost just four games in her first three matches. In the quarterfinals, Dahlem beat Glastonbury’s Alexandra DeNucci, 6-4, 6-0.

In 2011, Dahlem lost in the State Open final as a freshman to four-time State Open champion Kimmy Guerin of Weston, 6-0, 6-0. Dahlem didn’t play high school tennis as a sophomore or junior, choosing to play U.S. Tennis Association events.

The last Avon player to win an individual state championship was Kathy Justras in 1984 when she won the Class S singles title. Dahlem is the only Avon girl to make a State Open final.

GIRLS GOLF: The Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League’s season-ending golf tournament was cancelled after being rained out twice in two weeks. Avon had won the last three tournaments from 2011 through 2013.

UPDATE, June 23: Since graduation was the same day as the New England tournament, Grillo did not participate in the tournament this year.
